“I came to Cornwall for a relaxing break... then someone handed me a surfboard. What could possibly go wrong?”

There are road trips... and then there are Cornish road trips. Welcome to Cornwall, where adventure comes with a healthy dose of sea salt, sandy shoes and windswept hair.

Newquay – Britain’s Surfing Playground

No Cornish adventure would be complete without heading to Newquay, the UK’s undisputed surfing capital.

Whether you’re an experienced surfer carving up the Atlantic rollers or, like me, simply trying to stand upright for more than three seconds without introducing yourself to the seabed, there’s something utterly addictive about being out on the water.

The atmosphere is infectious. Surf shops line the streets, wetsuits drip outside cafés, camper vans seem permanently parked overlooking the beaches and everyone somehow looks effortlessly cool — even after spending twenty minutes being tumbled around like washing in a spin cycle.

The best part? Nobody really minds if you’re brilliant or completely hopeless. As long as you’re smiling, you’re doing Cornwall properly.

The Coastline That Never Gets Old

One of the greatest things about Cornwall isn’t just the surfing — it’s the coastline itself.

Towering cliffs, hidden coves, golden beaches stretching into the distance and crystal-clear water that somehow manages to look tropical... right up until you remember you’re still standing in Britain.

Every coastal path offers another excuse to stop, pull out the camera and convince yourself you’ve found the best view in Cornwall. Five minutes later you’ll find an even better one.

Whether you’re walking sections of the South West Coast Path, discovering secluded beaches or simply sitting with a coffee watching the waves roll in, Cornwall has a habit of slowing life down in the very best way.

Chasing the Perfect Sunset

As evening arrives, Cornwall puts on another spectacular show. The sunsets here seem almost unfair.

The sky explodes into oranges, reds and deep purples as the sun sinks into the Atlantic, surfers catch their final waves, and everyone quietly gathers along the beaches just to watch nature do what it does best.

It’s one of those rare moments where nobody is staring at their phones. Well... apart from taking about 600 photos they’ll never delete.

And honestly? Every single one is worth taking.

Beach Vibes and Good Times

One of the reasons I love Cornwall is that it never feels rushed.

You’ll find beach cafés serving incredible coffee, fish and chips that somehow taste even better after a day outdoors, live music drifting across the sand and that unmistakable laid-back atmosphere that makes you wonder why you don’t visit more often.

Flip-flops become acceptable footwear. Hair becomes optional. Sand appears absolutely everywhere. Even weeks later you’ll probably still discover some in your car.

It’s all part of the experience.

Adventure Doesn’t Just Happen...

Of course, there’s one little secret behind enjoying all these outdoor adventures. You have to look after yourself.

Surfing, hiking, mountain biking, paddleboarding, climbing, kayaking or even spending hours exploring the coastline all demand strength, balance and stamina.

That’s why I spend plenty of time in the gym when I’m not out exploring. No, it’s not because I enjoy burpees. Nobody enjoys burpees.

It’s because every squat, every rowing session and every workout makes those adventures more enjoyable, safer and far less likely to end with me lying dramatically on a beach wondering whose idea surfing was in the first place.

Fitness isn’t about looking good on the beach. It’s about making the most of every opportunity when adventure calls.

Life’s Better Outside

Whether you’re catching your first wave in Newquay, hiking dramatic cliff tops, exploring hidden coves, riding mountain bike trails or simply sitting on the sand watching another unforgettable Cornish sunset, one thing becomes very clear...

The best memories are usually made outdoors.

So, fuel the car, grab your walking boots, throw the wetsuit in the boot, don’t forget the sun cream — you’ll definitely forget the sun cream — and point yourself towards Cornwall.

Adventure is waiting. Just don’t blame me if you suddenly find yourself pricing up a camper van on the journey home...

Have you surfed in Cornwall? What’s your favourite beach, hidden cove or coastal walk? Let me know in the comments — I might just add it to my next Cornish road trip!
